History
At Royd, we take a step in the past when it comes to History! We like to explore dates and facts as if there actually happening and become creative historians! History is taught mainly through a topic based approach and gives pupils a chance to explore a wide range of sources from which the past may come alive.
History allows our children to compare and contrast, to examine how and why things have changed, to learn about historical characters and expand their research skills. We teach children to be open minded and enquiring thinkers who understand cause and effect. We want them to understand how people have lived in the past and compare this to modern life and empathise with these. We encourage first hand experiences through handling real artefacts such as in Year 1 they use real Victorian toys. Wherever possible we try and arrange visits to become the lives of these people which we do in Year 1 when we visit the Victorian Classroom. Year 2 learn about local history such as local historical figures and on local walks and visits.
